Pupils at the Palmer Academy in Reading, got ready to grow when Sarah Hacker, the Mayor of Reading, officially opened their new Edible Playground yesterday.
Children, teachers and parents took part in a range of fun activities to celebrate the outdoor area, from setting up the wormery – a huge favourite among the students with lots of happy faces and muddy hands – to making pizza toppings from fresh herbs and vegetables. Excited pupils from every class took part in sowing and planting strawberries, broad beans, lettuce, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, oriental salad, and a herb garden.
The Edible Playgrounds team worked with; Horticulturalist and Trees for Cities patron, Chris Collins; and RHS award winning landscapers, RDC Landscapes to deliver the project.
The project was supported by the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery, Chefs Adopt a School and School Food Matters. The local Dobbies garden centre kindly donated tools for the pupils.
