Cubitt Town Junior School is an above average sized junior school in Tower Hamlets with 369 pupils on roll. Pupils are happy, friendly, well behaved and they love learning, despite some significant life barriers. Over 50% of children at the school are entitled to Free School Meals, which is significantly higher than the UK average.
The school had a sizeable green play area which was largely underused, so we created an Edible Playground that would enhance school learning and include food growing, food education. cooking and healthy eating.
Robyn Bruce, Head Teacher at Cubitt Town Junior School said:
My main aim is to provide my pupils with a quality green space, but also to get parents involved in looking after the space and using the food grown. We want our school community to get their hands dirty and enjoy being outside! Having an Edible Playground will help us move forward in our quest to reach gold in the award marks – specifically, Healthy Schools, Advanced Extended Schools and the Science Quality Mark”.
